WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A few thousand black demonstrators rallied on the Mall in Washington on Saturday to demand that the U.S. government pay blacks reparations for slavery and decades of discrimination.
"I want to go up to the closest white person and say, 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing,' and then slap him, just for my mental health," Charles Barron, a member of the New York City Council, told the crowd.
The demonstrators, numbering about 2,000 to 3,000, came from all parts of the United States, many traveling by bus from as far away as Texas. With the U.S. Capitol in the background, they chanted "Black power! Reparations!" and "Start the Revolution!"
"Apologize White America," said a sign carried by one demonstrator.
Barron, a self-proclaimed "elected revolutionary," said if the government did not act swiftly he personally would storm the Treasury Department ( news - web sites) and take the money for reparations.
Black activist Louis Farrakhan told the crowd, "America owes the black people a lot for what they've endured."
"We need land for political independence, we need millions of acres," Farrakhan added. "We need payment for 310 years of slavery, of destruction of our minds and the robbery of our culture."
The United States, torn apart by the Civil War, abolished slavery in 1865. Some people argue that even 137 years after abolition, blacks still suffer from the vestiges of slavery.
U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, urged blacks to press their elected representatives in Congress to deal with the issue of slavery reparations.
"We want reparations -- not next century, not 10 years from now, but now," Conyers said. "These wrongs can only be corrected in the House of Representatives, only Congress can do what we want now. All congressmen ought to be here today."
Conyers has backed legislation that would require the House of Representatives to study slavery's effects on blacks.
Demonstrators said blacks deserved "long overdue" reparations, noting compensation won by Jews in the aftermath of the Nazi Holocaust and Japanese-Americans for their internment by the United States in camps during World War II.
The turnout was smaller than the tens of thousands of demonstrators forecast by organizers of the "Millions for Reparations" movement. But those who traveled to Washington said they believed the rally would make a difference.
"You have to really make some noise just to be heard," Edna Russell, who traveled from Denver, told Reuters.
Kobina Abew, an American citizen from Ghana dressed in a colorful African gown, said, "It's going to be very effective. It's going to bring a solution to this problem, I believe."

I think the reason a black city councilperson can get away with making threats against whites like this guy did is that white liberals generally patronize black liberals and treat them like children.

bump for catching up with the ping list later (my new cable modem should be in this evening - for those that don't know, we got struck by lightning Thursday night; I've only been intermittantly since then - my old iMac doesn't like the 28-35k phone line I've been relegated to)

disburse a $1000 check to each eligible recipient along with a one-way steerage ticket to the third-world hell-hole of his/her choice . . . and defray the cost by auctioning off his/her U.S. citizenship to the highest acceptable (no al Qaeda need apply) bidder.

Hmmmm. Some black racists are revolting today. Revolting? They're absolutely nauseating!
To: Dales
they, who were not the wronged, want to collect a lot of money taken from people like me, who did not commit the wrong. And just who will they demand pay? My family immigrated to America, to New York, to the Yankee towns, from Ireland and England, only three generations ago. They had NOTHING to do with slavery. And what about lots of blacks, who's ancesters are white? Then blacks should pay towards reparations if they have white in them. This whole thing is wrong and ridiculous. Slavery is over, and many WHITE people died to make it so.

Slavery is over, and many WHITE people died to make it so. The liberal big government solution will be to create a cabinet level "Department of Reparations." This agency will have an annual budget of several billion dollars just to pay staff (All African-American, of course).
Its mandate will be to decide who pays and who is paid.
Each claimant will need to have their individual claim heard by a judge. (lots of lawyers hired to be judges). Each person being asked to pay will have the same right. Defenses can be that your ancestors only arrived after 1865.
Since some "African-Americans" have white blood, the judge will decide how much these people receive---and what percentage they must pay back because of their white blood. Think of all the legal work this Department will generate! When you add in the consultants and contractors, it can put all of Jesse's people on the payroll without ever paying a dime in reparations!

The United States of America DID NOT EXIST until 1776. If you want to complain about who did what to whom before that - - - talk to the British, The French and the Spanish. But do not attempt to blame my native country or me.
SpringheelJack Response:
I know that, I was just being generous.
SpringheelJack - - - although it may read as such, I was not intending the comment to you. It was more of an attempt to bring out the 79 YEARS aspect of my comment. Sorry if I offended.

The United States of America DID NOT EXIST until 1776. Actually, from the point of view of the British, the USA did not exist until 1783.

Charles Barron,New York City Councilman. typifies the sad state of Black leadership in America. The code word for the "slapping of a white man", is: give us your money or see your cities destroyed.
"You can't understand this,it's a Black thing, and then slap him, just for my mental health." Sounds like he's starting a legal defense for himself, like "black rage".How disgusting, how terribly sad!

I will personally pay anyone I have enslaved whatever (s)he wants. My ancestral lineage didn't have any connection with this country until 1910. I guess I'd even consider chipping in for any slaves freed since then.

Reparations? If they really want reparations, they would go after their own African tribal leaders who sold them into slavery long before the Brits were involved. These tribal elders competed for lands to expand their tribes and power base. African tribal elders sold their own people into slavery throughout the known world - not just America - and once they were rid of their own people, they were able to steal their land. All this for sociopathic political gain, power, and money. Tyrany is the goal here, not freedom.
History and current events prove that politics hasn't changed much over the years. The political assasins installed in Africa now via UN endorsement (e.g. Mugabe) are still selling their own people into slavery, stealing farmland, denying or eliminating employment, and are currently denying Louis F's African brothers (and potential relatives) the right to a decent life. I am sure the luxury of food would be nice. Instead of blaming Washington and American taxpayers for all their current woes, the supporters of reparations should all organize, renounce their citizenship, and go back to Africa and take the land that was stolen from their ancestors, and get reparations from the cronies who are currently installed. This should make Louis F and his ilk very happy. They would then have their land, as well as their money, and the American taxpayers would have a few less deadbeats on the dole with their hands perpetually out.
As for the politician who said, "I want to go up to the closest white person and say, 'You can't understand this, it's a black thing,' and then slap him, just for my mental health," Charles Barron, a member of the New York City Council, told the crowd," -- does anyone know whether or not Hillary or other "democrats" have ties with this New Yorker, endorse or support his brand of politics? I am curious as to how any racist bigot could be elected into office, invoke racial slurs, and not be lambasted publically by his political peers and constituants. There are a whole lot of people in this country who are victimized by Mr. Barron's comments, and find his "black thing" insulting.
The bottom line is, man has been selling himself into slavery since the beginning of time. Race is only one of many tools politicians use to keep working people enslaved via taxation. As long as working people are forced to give over half of their paycheck to the government via taxes, and businesses are penalized via taxation for being able to hire people, we all will continue to be slaves until someone decides to have another tea party.

Exactly. How about reparations for my wife's brother and sister after being brutalized by some blacks at their school in Berkeley, CA, in the 1970s. My brother-in-law told me a story about how a black gang hit him over the head with a chain. He had a principal at his junior high who would hold assemblies for black students. This principal once told my mother-in-law "Don't tell me about racism", when she confronted him.
In my sister-in-law's yearbook for Berkeley High School 1973, there was an actual poem which read as follows.
"Die my young black son, die, Before madness of whitey completes the killing of your soul..."

"Hmmmm. Some black racists are revolting today.""Racists"??
I dunno 'bout that, my friend.
Sound more like black seperatists, to me.
Which of course, is their right; &, a right I'd fight along side of 'em to have.
These Black seperatists -- for reason(s) all their own -- seem to have a vision, a plan for the people who're following their teachings.
Trick will be for all of us to encourage them in their pursuit of said vision(s) & plan(s) at every opportunity; so long as their *dreams* are to be financed on their own dime.
~eh?
...their next challenge could then be extending such courtesy to all peoples.
