Former Hub DJ accused of child sex abuse

WASHINGTON - Former WBCN-FM disc jockey Mark Parenteau faced first-degree child sexual abuse charges in Superior Court in Washington, D.C., yesterday after he was arrested for having sex with a 14-year-old boy.

The 52-year-old Boston rock radio legend, who was on the air here for more than 20 years, was arrested at his home Wednesday after the boy complained to police that Parenteau had sex with him three times in the disc jockey's D.C. apartment.

Parenteau, a program director for XM Satellite Radio Inc. in Washington, was confined to a halfway house, pending his next court appearance. He was ordered to surrender his passport, submit to a drug test and avoid contact with children under 16.

The DJ, who had been held without bond in a Washington jail until yesterday's probable-cause hearing, appeared in court wearing a blue prison jumpsuit with rolled-up sleeves and wire-rimmed glasses. He appeared dazed.

``This appears to be a man who has a secretive life,'' prosecutor Sharon Marcus-Kurn told Judge Robert I. Richter. ``The evidence suggests he's a pedophile, a danger to the community''

Marcus-Kurn said police found more than 200 pornographic videos in Parenteau's apartment, including one that appeared to be teens engaging in sex acts and appeared ``homemade.''

But Parenteau's attorney, Ed Ungvarsky, told the court there was ``no evidence'' his client knew the boy was underage. A police detective testified the boy ``looked 15.''

Parenteau is charged with having sex with the teen three times between May 31 and June 8. A Washington police affidavit outlined the case against him:

``The (teen) reported that on Saturday, June 2 . . . he was laying on the couch playing video games. He stated that his head was resting on the defendant's lap,'' the affidavit said. ``The defendant started rubbing his stomach.''

Then, the affidavit says, Parenteau asked the boy to perform oral sex and the 14-year-old complied.

On May 31, the affidavit states, Parenteau performed the same sex act on the boy after rubbing and squeezing him.

``(Parenteau) asked the complainant if what he did to him felt good, and he replied, `Yes,' '' the affidavit states.

On June 3, according to the affidavit, Parenteau asked the boy to watch pornographic movies of black and white men having sex then he put on a condom and had intercourse with the 14-year-old.

``The defendant then said to the complainant, `Look what I found' and gave the complainant $20 in U.S. currency,'' the report states.

Parenteau, a fixture on the Boston radio scene, did afternoons on the old ``Rock of Boston'' for more than 20 years until he was let go in 1997. His first gig in Boston was at the old WCOZ-FM. After parting ways with 'BCN he did fill-in work on WRKO-AM and WTKK-FM and a stint at Q104 in New York.

``If he did what they say he did, it's really, really poor judgment,'' said longtime 'BCN morning man Charles Laquidara from his home in Hawaii.

A spokesman for the pay radio service, where Parenteau has programmed comedy and hosted afternoon rock show for the past two years, said he has been placed on ``administrative leave.''

``We have just become aware of the situation,'' said XM's Chance Patterson. ``It would be premature to say anything more until more information becomes available.''

I was a longtime listener of WBCN in my younger days and listening to Parenteau's show was a regular feature of my day. I am shocked to find out that he is probably a pedophile (I know, he is not convicted yet but it doesn't look good based on the facts so far released). Just goes to show that you never know about people. If he is found guilty of this, I hope he never sees another ray of sunlight.

I don't listen to WBCN much anymore because like most other rock stations, they have switched to a "Howard Stern" format with "shock" DJs. It's not about the music anymore but how much far they can push the envelope such as this recent stunt performed by New York DJs. It's pretty sad FM radio has come to this because I am a big music fan and there are precious few stations where you can find good music these days. Currently I do most of my radio listening on MIT's radio station (88.1 WMUR) because they actually play some pretty good music (most of the time).

No, loser. "Poor Judgement" is buying Enron stock at the top of the bubble. "Poor Judgement" is thinking you can ski down the steep part and taking a big fall.

Targeting boys for sex, plying them with money and video games ... this is not poor judgement. It is evil criminal behaviour of the first order. You are failing to make critical distinctions, Charles. A much better quote would have been "If he did what they said he did he is an evil man and should rot in prison for the rest of his days". But then you media elites sanction these "alternative lifestyles" and cover up for your friends routinely, don't you.

I also was struck by that "poor judgment" quote by Charles Laquidara. Poor judgment? As if it would have been better judgment had Parenteau done the same thing with a 17-year-old.

WBCN is a complete cesspool these days with a hideous line-up of Howard Stern, Nik Carter and Opie & Anthony (who recently pulled that stunt at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York). The arrest of Parenteau and the lukewarm comment by Laquidara suggets that WBCN has been a cesspool for a long time. Apparently even the long-time program director (Oedipus) has some skeletons in the closet. Check out this bizarre website.

No doubt that pedophiles don't start when they are 52 years old. There are probably many other victims of Mark Parenteau. Many of those victims will probably never tell because they were "willing" as this one appeared to be based on the complaint.

Willing or not however, it's criminal behavior and sick.

BTW, when I first heard of this yesterday, I gave Parenteau the benefit of the doubt since there was a chance he might have been falsely charged. But since Parenteau has admitted through his lawyer that he had sex with this boy and is going to base his defense on "I thought the boy was older," any sympathy I had for him is gone. I say throw the book at him, give him his fair trial, lock him up and throw away the key.
