The original link to this article in Discover Magazine appears to have been changed. I did find it, or one similar to it, here....

YES!
I developed tinnitus a couple years ago. At first it was trying to drive me batty. It was constant and bothersome. The specialists told me there wasn’t much that could be done. If the noise interfered with hearing conversations a hearing aid might possibly help.
I’ve since learned to put up with it. It’s not as bad now as it was - it’s always there, but sometimes barely noticeable.
I can understand how some people would be driven to the edge. If mine was loud all the time I’d be a full scale nutcase.

I’ve had tinnitus since my early 20’s. When it first appeared it was really disturbing, but after 30 years, it’s just normal background noise. Very unpleasant, something like a high-pitched whistle somewhere in the distance that never stops. I’d love to get rid of it, but it doesn’t ruin my life.

Snickersnee finds that at least half his returning veterans from “the sandbox” and “the rockpile” complain of tinnitus. He tells them to include it in their VA disability claim. An easy 10%! Pass it on.

Tinnitis is horrible.

I used to have it really bad after a sinus infection, and it lasted for months.

Still, many have had it MUCH worse than me.

NOW, IF THEY COULD CURE ***FLOATERS*** IN THE EYES, I would be thrilled.

If anybody has found something that gets rid of floaters, let me know.

Thank You! I contracted Tinnitus four years ago due to a bad reaction to a prescription drug. I went back to the doctor and he basically blew me off by telling me it was impossible for this to happen. The drug was Vioxx. It almost drove me insane for a month but I learned to live with it. It’s still extremely annoying.

I sure hope this works! I have had this condition for about 5 years, courtesy of a 155mm Charge 5 White Bag at Fort Sill, OK back in 1967. I try to ignore it, but I would rather not have to.

So Lenhardt has found a way to reprogram the brain

WoW! That's amazing. If they can reprogram the brain do do this, maybe they can reprogram the brain to help people with addictions, or autistic children and maybe they can even reprogram the brain to treat obesity. IF they get real good maybe they can reprogram the brain of liberals. LOL I suppose that's too much to hope for. ;o)

I was getting all excited to tell my neighbor (who has tinnitus) about this "breakthrough" until I saw the original date that this was posted 08/14/2002.
That is pretty old news! I'm sure the audiology field is well informed about this 5 years hence.
They may have some better treatments by now?

I wonder if breakthroughs will cease by taking away the profit motive with socialized medicine?

Thanks for posting this. I am a drummer, and as a young rock & roller in my 20’s and 30’s on the road, I developed this condition.
