Sungirl.
I am a blubbering fool now after that story. All my animals stay inside and have been spayed and neutered, but I worry so much about all the abandoned animals. I know the names of most of the animals that live in the vicinity of my house and look out for them.
We had a feral cat living in the neighborhood that someone left it behind when they moved and my neighbor and I fed it. My neighbor had been there longer than us and she had already been feeding it and had it fixed. It died last year and stayed unapproachable, but at least it had good food to eat and lived many years without bothering anyone.
My mom just found a 3 week kitten in her backyard and is taking it in--she has no idea where it came from. It took her several tries before she caught it. It was scared to death.
I'm with Sungirl--there is NO excuse for animal cruelty (that includes shooting them for trespassing!)and the problem is with the HUMAN owners.

I like cats. I've always had at least one as a pet, and I have one now that I'm very fond of.
That said, the surest way of controlling feral cats it a with a .22 rifle. One well-placed bullet and it's all over. You terrorize a wild cat when you trap it and take it to be sterilized. You inflict pain with the veterinarian's knife. No, it's far more humane to drop it in its tracks.

You do realize that story was pure fiction don't you?

If there were more compassionate and understanding people like you and your mom this world would be such a great place.

there is NO excuse for animal cruelty (that includes shooting them Well, if you kill 'em quickly it's not cruel.
That being said, I doubt if I would shoot a cat unless it was being a REAL problem (e.g. killing chickens or whatever. Just as I would a racoon or any other wild animal attacking livestock.) But I wouldn't feed it either.
