Doc Holliday was the fiance of one of Margaret ("Gone With The WInd") Mitchell's cousins. I believe she based the character of Melanie on this cousin. He left her to go West and she never recovered. I read something about this in a biography of Margaret Mitchell.

Doc had TB and had to close his dentist practice, whereupon he moved out West where the air might be better. He was given two years to live, but lived 4 years anyway. He actually died of TB in spite of his best efforts to go out explosively. A Southern Gentleman.
