Maybe I've forgotten my history, but didn't the Krauts surrender on 8 May 45 and the first successful test was at Alamagordo, NM in July?

This is true, which is why I don't doubt if the US had the bomb before the war ended in Europe, Roosevelt would have used it. Too bad though Russia wasn't made to leave Eastern Europe, we had the power to make them and didn't use it.

We all have to remember that Studs Terkel is a leftist that did some decent work (Brother Have You Got a Dime?; The Last Good War) but usually with that slant. I can't figure out what he is up to here because it, the timing issue, is simply off.

Look at it this way, eastern europe is now a closer ally to america than western europe will ever be. (excluding the english, of course, and maybe norway)
