According to the later article, the ranger was wearing "body armor". You should know however, that there is no such thing as a bullet proof vest. This ranger was shot with a rifle, and any of the vests that are practical to wear will not stop a high velocity rifle caliber bullet.
The best way to stop a rifle bullet is to kill the shooter.
