The Iraqi branch of the Hashemite monarchy, established in 1921 with the blessing of Great Britain, was overthrown in July 1958 by a military coup led by General Abdelkarim Kassem. Prince Adil's grandfather King Faisal II was killed. Not only that, but his corpse was paraded about after a brutal assassination.
