You're making the same mistake as the author of the article: you take an unmistakably great, classic movie (which of course North by Northwest is), you compare it to some piece of crap released by Miramax or whatever, and then blithely proclaim "See! Movies used to be so much better!"

All based on what? Comparing Frank Capra to Adam Sandler? Alfred Hitchcock to Joe Esterhas? I've got nothing against complaining about modern crap movies or anything, but can't you guys at least try to make a fair comparison?

Frankly, the stand-up sex routine has been in so many supposedly good movies of the same caliber as NxNW that I can not recall specifically which ones it was in. And if it is not the "stand-up sex routine", then it will be the "woman on top rolling around the bed" routine.

I was not specifically comparing the Waterboy or Dumb and Dumber to NxNW, because as you say, that would not be fair. Waterboy is better compared to Paleface or Son of Paleface.

And if you will note, I also admitted that much "Golden Age of TV" was crap. I am a firm believer in Sturgeon's rule that "90% of everything is crap,."

That being said, too many supposedly first rate, well-directed movies over the past 10-15 years have been complete pieces of crap. Take the Die Hard series for example. Entertaining, but stupid. All the exploding stuff and people hurling thru the air in front of the blast tricks.

There are great movies tho. Take the "13th Warrior" Absolutely great, well-filmed, and entertaining. Take "Zoolander". Hilarious comedy. Well done.
