I'm still amazed that they could reach the 78th floor, even if they had used some still-functioning lower floor elevators. And they had to carry heavy equipment, too.
People like me could barely make it 10 floors, let alone 78.

The thing that brings a lump to my throat is that these guys acted like this even though they must have known they could do little or nothing to really help. There was no water to be had to fight the fires, that had been lost in the crash. Their mere presence must have given hope & courage to everyone they met in the towers but...
I don't mean to be mordant but I think these emergency workers, particularly the firefighters, knew that they were climbing to their deaths. And they did it anyway. That is courage and responsibility to duty!

People like me could barely make it 10 floors, let alone 78. Don't sell yourself short, aside from being trained professionals - they were on a mega adrenaline rush.
