Someone should check to see if Lousiana State University allows students who live in on-campus dormitories to carry guns. I doubt it. I know many colleges and universities forbid these students from owning and/or carrying a firearm on their grounds. It may be a liability issue, but it's more likely a gun control issue, since most people in academia are lefties. I wrote an editorial in the student newspaper in response to a rash of assaults close and on my campus (University of Delaware), and I mentioned that fact in my piece. But I also mentioned that people off-campus should carry, and learn to safely use their weapons. It's ridiculous, since the campus police aren't even armed with guns! (Even though the local town's police are). It's a continuing issue on campus. After I wrote my editorial, a couple leftist peers of mine wrote angry letters in response, and I argued with one of them over e-mail. Their ignorance is disturbing.

Not only can College students generally not have firearms on campus, but if memory serves me correctly, New Orleans was one of the first cities to sign on to the lawsuit against the manufacture of handguns under a strict product liability theory.
So here we have a Governor saying if you are afraid, go get a handgun and arm yourself (very reasonable) and the ruling elite of New Orleans saying that hangunds by their very nature are so dangerous that their manufactures should be run out of business.
I love it.

Having gone to school at Tulane in the 1980's, I can testify that several of the people in my dorm kept firearms in their rooms.
The campus police hired students to patrol the campus at night. They wore orange safety vests and carried radios. Most of them also carried large caliber handguns under their vests.
I know that several of the women in the female dorm packed heat around campus too.
Tulane and the adjacent Loyola didn't have much of a rape problem.
