Bush Warns Congress on Homeland Bill ("Go ahead. Make my day.)
The Washington Post ^ | 7.26.02 | Curt Anderson

President Bush sternly warned Congress on Friday against passing a bill that limits the personnel and budgetary powers of the head of a new Department of Homeland Security, giving the clearest indication yet that he would veto a measure now before the Senate.

"A time of war is the wrong time to weaken the president's ability to protect the American people," Bush told a White House audience that included governors, mayors, firefighters, police and lawmakers.

I don't understand all this infighting. Isn't this bill for our protection? Yes I understand there's concerns about our civil liberties, but surely both sides can work this out, before the terrorists strike again.

How plainly could he say it?

He is like the parent that threatens but never delivers the whooping he has been promising. The democrats will ignore this threat too.

Yeah, me too. I just wish he would do more of it.

The Department of Fatherland Security can do no more to protect you from the generalized threat of politically-motivated criminal attacks than the DoD, FBI, NSA, CIA, Coast Guard, and FAA could as of September 11, 2001.

The only things that can mitigate the threat of future terrorist attacks are: an armed citizenry; an end to all foreign aid; a foreign policy of a republic, not an empire; and control of our borders. Until these are accomplished, Bush's Big New Toy is just another palatial wing on D.C.'s monuments to its own thievery.

With any luck, Congress and the Executive will never agree and this monstrosity won't get passed.

King George, the one term president. I'm glad I voted my conscience rather than for the lesser of two evils back in November 2000.

The Dems are out to create another slothful civil service bureaucracy with the Homeland bill. Its THEIR constituency.

....and, and, and .....

It's the back 'and, and, and' part that we should be screaming about
especially until the borders are sealed and the visas are distributed as before!!!!!!!

Why are freedoms subtracted but nothing done to fight domestic terrorist opportunity??!!??!!!!!!

Much tougher talk....I like it. I also like that all the depts he wanted transferred have survived both bills...so far.

Flexibility re: civil service is critical too. I keep being reminded of the guy who worked for the BPA. This guy was caught on tape, urinating into desk drawers of his female co-workers. There had been complaints for months prior to the taping of his actions. It almost took an act of Congress to get him removed. And even then, if I recall correctly, he was let go under the ADA with full disability pay and benefits. SIMPLY because the civil service laws are SO restrictive re: hiring and firing.

Finally I have read something on FR that I can agree with...!!!!
Are most of the posters on FR asleep with their head in the sand..??
Sure seems like that...

Terrorists have been active for 100's of years against one thing or another...
The best any country can do is to slow them down somewhat... but the threat can never be eliminated

They picked the WRONG 'one thing or another' this time.

Your logic puzzles me. Just because something exists...or HAS existed for 100's of year, does NOT mean that it should not be eradicated. Or that it CAN'T be eradicated.
