I am the same way. I call ahead, and wait on the phone with the other parent until I know for sure my children have reached their destination. My parents only live a block away and I follow the same procedure with them. This "phone call" procedure STILL may not stop someone from grabbing the child and putting them in a car. The phone call system is only going to alert you AFTER the fact. My granson is 7 going on 8 and I would not let him walk even 2 doors down--alone. It's just the way it is.

Let me explain it better: they are withing my sight at all times...they are not allowed to walk to their friend's house unless I can see them, and they are not allowed to walk back UNTIL I receive a phone call telling me they are on their way home. They are never without my supervision while going to or coming from that house.

Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. The other mom is on a portable phone waiting in her front yard, it is a straight shot, three doors from my home. She is able to see them with no obstructions from the time they leave our corner.(I still look out the window to make sure they're across ok) My kids are a little older too. (14 and 10) I don't allow my seven year old to go anywhere alone.
