I agree with you. That's no different than saying a woman should have fought off her rapist. The article doesn't say how big the victim was or anything. For all we know he was 5'4" and weighed a 110 pounds. But even that would not be an excuse for saying he should have fought him off. A lot of people can sit there quite easily when it's not them and say 'I woulda done this and I woulda done that' but until you're in that situation you just don't know what you'd do.
Why don't we blame the passengers on the 9/11 flights for not having fought back? They had the terrorists outnumbered no? Why even go to war over it when the passengers should have fought them off? This is a line of argument I don't think people want to go down. This rapist is obviously an ANIMAL- he's not human- and here this other guy is locked in a cage with him. I'm not going to blame him or second guess his actions. He's been violated and brutalized- it would be too much like cheering the rapist on to say the victim should've castrated him or whatever.

Yes, that's why an integral part of many rape prevention/self defense programs is developing the mindset ahead of time that you will do as much as necessary, up to and including killing with your bare hands, to prevent the attack. Maybe that should be part of the orientation for new prisoners, although I'm sure the guards would object.
