I'm not faulting the kid, just wondering why he took it without resisting. There's no doubt the assailant should have been put in solitary after he attempted to assault the first inmate. But even 19 is old enough to know that you can resist a guy with no weapons. Maybe there was a substantial size disparity, I don't know, but giving in to empty threats is not the wisest course.
I'm just thinking he didn't know the threats were "empty" - and really, do we? Hard to predict with a pig like Westbrook.
He was probably a small-framed white boy, fresh from the 'burbs and public high school curriculum that stressed the wonders of multiculturalsism and diversity. He had likely never before in his life faced a vicious career criminal before. The kid was probably terrified.
Personally, I would have screamed, shouted and went straight for his eyes and nuts, but then again I've never been in such a situation and don't know exactly how I'd have reacted.
Possibly. I don't take issue with the fact that he was in jail in the first place, but I do object to the idea that what happened to him is an inevitable part of prison life. Not to say that you think that, but I've seen a few posters elsewhere with an "oh, well" sort of attitude.
Maybe he should have resisted more, but I think it's hard to disagree with the idea that he really shouldn't have been forced to make that sort of choice in the first place. Rape, beating, or in the worst case, beaten until he's no longer able to resist the rape. This kind of thing is much too common in prisons and jails around the country, and I think we've all turned a blind eye to it for long enough.
And yes, he should have been in jail. Maybe his sad misfortune will be a lesson to the other spoiled, rich, white boys that Littleton is so full of (from what I hear). Their privileged, sheltered little world can come to a screeching halt.
