If someone is not used to defending themselves, it's all over after that first right hook to the head, the one they never learned to watch our for. I always hear "They'd have to kill me first," but in reality they only have to beat you semi-concious. Your average 19 year old suburban kid is not going to last 10 seconds against a hardened criminal who's been to years of gladiator school.

The deputies did this on purpose. Without their uniforms they would be prison prom dates themselves (they should be).

A first class nuke-MM I worked with got a flat tire. He called a buddy off the ship to come get hime, then sat against a post to wait. He fell asleep, and was awakened by repeated kicks to his gut. He had no idea who was attacking him until he felt the cuffs go on. Racist cops in Agana Guam decided to have some fun with a white sailor. They took him to a building, cuffed hiim to t chair, beat him bloody, then rubbed pepper-spray in his wounds until he was screaming. Then they charged him with resisting and the usual crap.

He went to the JAG when he was taken back to the ship, but they gave him zero support. In fact, he was branded a troublemaker. He was a damn good petty officer and MM.

Sure, everyone who gets arrested deserves what they get.

I will (grudgingly) grant the second shift deputies a claim of ignorance for not knowing about the problem earlier in the day. I will not grant them or any of the department a claim of ignorance for the following offenses mentioned in the article. All of these prior offenses should have been documented on the man. Any one of them should have warranted segregation of the serial homosexual rapist.

"He goes to trial Monday in Jefferson County District Court on 14 sexual assault charges."

"He is accused of sexually assaulting another inmate April 3 at the Denver Regional Diagnostic Center where he was held awaiting placement in a state prison."

"Westbrook arrived at DRDC March 13. He was charged with sexual assault against the two Jefferson County inmates in January."

One final point. I live in a small Mississippi town. I grew up in and work in 2 even smaller West Texas towns. What is not directly visible to officers supervising the jails is covered by camera. There should be no part of a jail not under constant electronic or human supervision. If a backwards ass place like this town can do it, any place should be able to.

I was just pointing out to you that there are people here who apparently do think this 19 year-old deserved the rape. He was incarcerated, and therefore he's fair game in the minds of some.

Saying he deserved to be incarcerated, or that he's probably learned not to violate any more court orders is not the same as saying he deserved to be raped. That's the distinction I'm trying to make that you seem to be missing. No, he didn't deserve it but, having broken the law and screwing up further by failing to go to the class the judge ordered, he knew he was headed for jail where - unfortunately - prison rape is a sad fact of life.

For the last time, I didn't say he deserved the assault. Enough.

People are sent to jail as punishment--not for punishment.
