Jobs Unveils iTIPS Program for Reporting OS9 Users
By Brian Briggs

New York, NY - Steve Jobs announced many new products last week during his keynote address at MacWorld New York, but one new service by Apple which didn't get mentioned may be the most important. Lost in all the announcements of new iPods and iMacs, was the new iTIPS Hotline for reporting users of OS 9.

"We need to crack down on these slackers who aren't moving to OS X," said Jobs. "If a friend or loved one is still using OS 9 please call 1-900-UPGRADE-ALREADY. The call only costs $9.99 per minute. Isn't it worth any cost to make sure your friends and relatives have the best computing experience possible?"

After an incident is reported Apple dispatches a black turtleneck-clad band of Upgrade Artists, armed only with an inflated sense of position in the computer world. "After we shame them by telling them how uncool they are to be using OS 9 the conversion is pretty easy," said Upgrade Artist Geoffrey Sinclair. "I mean, everybody knows the letter X is a lot cooler than the number 9. What sort of loser wouldn't want to upgrade just for that reason?"

"It was like the French Gestapo," one convert related. "They came in, shamed me, and proceeded to install a demo version of OS X on my iMac. Unfortunately, they erased all my data and left me with a semi-functional operating system. I tried installing OS 9 again, but it was impossible. I'll have to go out and buy OS X. Stupid demos."

Stubborn OS 9 users have already formed resistance groups. They have been spraypainting messages like "9 RULES" and "NO X, YES 9" around Circuit City, and thrashing OS X distribution vans.

Apple responded to criticism by saying it was waiving the upgrade fee for customers who already paid for their upgrade previously.

Go ahead. Turn me in. I'm still getting used to OS9, and frankly OSX scares me.

I'm still using 9. I'm gonna ride this horse until I get one of those 17" eMacs later this year or early next.

Me too. I bought the dual desktop which will swing with X but I'm waiting for the aftermarket to catch up.

I have the dual 533 but I'll upgrade when they get to 2 or 3G.

And I'll be selling Fuller brushes until Christmas to pay for the 21" display.

First they came for the OS 7 users, and I said nothing...

Then they came for the OS 8 users, and I said nothing...

UH oh!

Truth to tell, I may go X later this year, early next. There's no REALLY BIG reason, i.e., productivity, to call me. I've got X-compatible illustration, photo and layout software, so once I get around to upgrading my version of GoLive and Suitcase, I'll probably upgrade the OS. Till then, nine is fine.

Crashing LESS than nine should be something to see. OS 9 hums along happily for me unless I truly CRANK on it (switching back and forth with heavy hitters like ID and PS, while burning a disk in the background, for example).

Speaking of upgrades... being a SCSI veteran from way back, and new to the ways of ATA/IDE drives, can you put an operating system on a 'slave' drive, or will the machine only boot from a 'master?'

Heck, I just upgrade my machine to a G4 450 (shows you how far behind I am).

My problem was my upgraded 7500 just kept on going and going and going. Now my wife has it. The only thing that can screw it up is Q-Bert.

They already came for the OS 8 users?

Damn, I get left out of everything!

You can put the operating system on a slave drive. Additionally you can put the OS on a CD you burn so you can have your own recovery CD. Or you can put it on one of those firewire pocket drives and boot-up from there. I don't know if this works with the iPod though.

Well, Jobs says 9 is dead, so 8.x and 7.x are, what? In "OS Heaven?"

OS Purgatory?

Damn, I get left out of everything!

You're a Mac user. Apparently, not only is there not enough software, there's not enough oppression.

Thank you very much.

I just came into possession of a nice little 60 gig Matrox drive, and my 'drive strategy' has always been one of multiple redundancy, if at all possible. Boot from disk A to work on disk B, and vice versa; that sort of thing.

'Sides, I may just partition the 60 gig and give X a try...

Now if I can just find the jumper guide...
