S E A T T L E, July 23 A Muslim activist being investigated for potential ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network was arrested in Denver, his mother said Tuesday.
James Ujaama, 36, who has been living in London in recent years, was arrested at his aunt's home Monday, his mother, Peggi Thompson, told The Associated Press.
"The FBI came and got him," Thompson said. "It's a federal charge of being a material witness. There's nothing I can do or anything right now. Nobody's saying anything."
The arrest was first reported in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Tuesday.
John Hartingh, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Seattle, would not confirm the arrest and declined further comment. A message left Tuesday with the FBI in Seattle was not immediately returned, and officials in Washington, D.C., said they were not aware of an arrest.
Ujaama's brother, Mustafa, was also briefly detained Monday. The brothers are well known in Seattle, where some community leaders have applauded their work to rid their neighborhood of drugs and prostitution.
News reports this month have said the brothers were being investigated for their ties to the now-defunct Dar-us-Salaam mosque, which was said to be under scrutiny for possible links to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network.
In a statement last week, Mustafa Ujaama called allegations against him and his brother "utterly ridiculous." He said neither he nor his brother is a terrorist.
News reports have indicated federal authorities believe James Ujaama took laptop computers to the Taliban in Afghanistan and worked on a British Web site that advertised the "Ultimate Jihad Challenge," a paramilitary training course in the United States. British authorities shut the site down following the Sept. 11 attacks.
James Ujaama also runs a Web site called stopamerica.org, which opposes U.S. foreign policy.

Wow - I didn't even catch that. The leaders in their community paint these guys as stand-up citizens. They were trying to rid the community of drugs and prostitution (in between trips to Afghanistan?).
