The fish has primarily been imported to the United States for its excellent taste, even when eaten smoked or dried.

There's the up side. Provided it really does taste excellent.

a ban on U.S. imports of the predatory fish . . .The snakehead, which can grow up to 3 feet long, eats other fish

It is probably not a good idea to import this thing but I bet this writer could conjure up some pretty terrifying descriptions of bass and pike if he put his mind to it.

Maryland officials are considering poisoning a small lake where at least 80 baby snakeheads have been found.

Someone should spill some Gramoxone (a restricted use herbicide) in the pond the next time they spray the weeds. That stuff will kill everything in the pond.

The snakehead, which can grow up to 3 feet long, eats other fish and can walk across land to find new sources of food in other lakes and streams. The fish can stay out of water for up to three days.

Sounds like a good case for an unrestricted open season, no bag limits. Shotgun only in built up areas, otherwise anything goes, although a .22 rimfire or a varmit rifle would seem adequate. Handguns too of course. In fact, maybe only handguns would be fun.

With sharp teeth and powerful jaws, big snakeheads can bite other fish in half

But don't get too close. :)

Interesting to find one illegal immigrant group which the U.S. government is quick to ban. They sure don't worry about the threats OUT of the water.

Years ago I remember hearing about the walking catfish. They could leave a pond or stream that had dried up & walk to another one. Is this the same fish?

If it tastes better than bass [or more generally, the sunfish family - BLECCH!!!], then why not import the damn thing. Largemouth bass are some of the most disgusting fish on the face of the earth.

I'd only be worried if it started to supplant the catfish population.
