Did the police ask where he was two hours before they arrived, or just about his week-end travels? I thought that he went to the dry cleaners on Monday.

He went to the drycleaners twice on Monday. He did not tell about trip #1 right after it happened. Then, later that day when he was being interviewed by Det. Redden (tape entered into evidence) he told about trip #2, but again, did not tell about trip #1.
