Sounds more like the Brits didn't want to hang it on a guy who spent the last 4 years hanging out with every communist on the block and the US looks like a convenient scapegoat. Read the article very very carefully. You'll see no communique -- official or unofficial -- came from the US urging the denying of the knighthood. Seems to be something the UK was taking upon themselves.
