Hi pars,

At this point, pretty much the whole psychological community agrees on this: all pedophiles were molested as children, yet all of these victims do not grow up to be pedophiles. So, what's the deciding factor? I have some professional experience in this area so I will say early detection and intervention is critical. This is not something that can be swept under the rug and become "a family secret". Thankfully, this attitude is becoming less common.

A victim will go either of two ways: they will identify in the victim role, develop compassion and perhaps go on to help other people, or they will identify with the predator's role and move on to become abusers themselves (this applies in all types of abuse). If the childhood victims are treated and monitored, the tendency towards the latter diminishes (although I don't have specific statistics for you). The child/would be abuser can start abusing early on, sometimes in childhood on other children. (It is very common, however, for all child victims to act out what is happening to them. They don't always tell with words but frequently behavior and pictures). Anyway, the child/future abuser who grows up without treatment will prey until he or she gets caught and even afterward. They have zero compassion for their victims. That's common, although the level of violence and sadism varies. This guy Avila sounds off the charts there.

Can any of these people be rehabilitated? The stats are dismal. Many have tried but once a predator gets to adulthood I would say the chances are not good. If/once some of these people get out of jail, should they be forever monitored in a halfway house or with an ankle monitor of some sort? I don't know. Would the less violent ones participate in some kind of research or aversion therapy? Maybe. It would take committment and a desire to be healed. I think that's rare. There has to be some way of determining who is the most dangerous and likely to reoffend and release them in the appropriate setting, if at all.

I have to wonder if this Avila guy was on an illegal drug, perhaps meth, when he did this or if he was into any evil practices. He went much further than the average pedophile goes.

That's what mrs.parsifal says, too. She works in the mental health field. Its probably right, but I always get a little nervous when everybody agrees on something. I like to sorta self-check myself and make sure I'm not caught up in just repeating and parroting what everybody else says. parsy the semi-contrarian.
