Then you should have noticed that RobRoy isn't spouting liberal nonsense.

Unless you responded to him by mistake and intended to respond to Sungirl.

If I don't understand something, it's either poorly written, intentionally obfuscating, or internally contradictory. Or all three. My we have a high opinion of ourselves today don't we? "If I don't understand something, it's someone *else's* fault..."
RobRoy you must have some real insight (as well as intellect) to have so graciously bowed out when this guy is just begging to have his ego deflated.
To: Dark Mirage
RobRoy: "...Mere Christianity"
Dark Mirage "If you understood it, then it must be garbled froth. "
Are you admitting to not understanding it? Geez, it was the easiest dissertation on theology I've read by Lewis.

I have no idea what you are rambling about. I would respectfully suggest that you read Diamond's post #607 again, more slowly. It's a little thick, but then most metaphysics and ethics are (C.S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft are among the few that can make the topics accessible). I thought the piece did a pretty good job explaining the problem it addressed.
I read an article once from a philosophy prof who said one of his greatest chores was to get students who were used to speed-reading their texts to slow down enough to understand what they were reading.

I agree most are not taught to write well.
However that you are the objective standard just because someone pays you is really... kind of a silly thing to say. Everyone knows that people pay for a lot of nonsense in this world, so what kind definitive proof is it that you are any good at what you do?
Keep in mind that people on FR write as they would speak, for the most part. I find it very easy to understand someone speaking even if the grammar is atrocious. Analogies and metaphors often make me slow down, and Diamond's post made use of the sawing the branch on which you sit... once you get that in your head (the branch being your assertion implied by his "So if you say that persons do not transcend animals in this regard" - I'm assuming from this statement that that humans aren't morally superior to animals), it makes sense.
As to whether or not we are taught morals - yes to an extent we have them reinforced by social structure. However, since someone brought up Mere Christianity, I will say that Christians believe that moral laws are also hard coded into each human being. The motivation to follow them, however, is corrupt, and needs nurturing. More so in some, less in others.
Since you are an expert in the area of writing, why don't you try helping Diamond rephrase his point more clearly? You *can* do that, even if you don't agree with his point of view. If you wish people to respect your ability to write and to edit their writing, that would be the way to do it, not by poking fun at theirs. I would imagine if you did that to your coworkers your yearly review would be kind of lacking in the "plays well with others" column.

By the way... if your server times out when you hit "post," the post usually does go through. No need to hit "post" multiple times. ;-)
LOL notice the keyword added "My ego's so big"
How did that get there? I never use them so I have no idea.

"I'm assuming from this statement that that humans aren't morally superior to animals"
Oops. Typo. Should say "you asserted" in between the first "THAT" and the second "THAT."

Third paragraph of my post, last line. Cyrano did tell you to read slower didn't he? < G >

So? Sloppiness in speech and writing is commonly indicative of fuzzy thought. I did not see sloppiness in Diamond's post. I saw complex sentences speaking of metaphors, the two of which take more time to process than your normal newspaper story prose which I could read and comprehend before Kindergarten (with the exception of a few vocabulary words or concepts with which I was as yet unfamiliar).

We're apes with a scarcity of hair, large brains, and speechThank you for your direct answer. I'll keep my reply simple, because this is a matter of simple logic. By reducing human beings to the level of animals, you destroy the foundation of your own moral condemnation of savagery. Consequently, your own moral condemnations of the boiling of a lobster and the torturing of a cat over live coals are self-refuting. To use another lazy cliche, your philisophical feet are firmly planted in mid-air. No personal animosity intended here. That's just what I see.
Cordially,
