The statute mile in the U.S. differs slightly from that of the U.K.

Must be because of the warm beer and driving on the left side of the road :o)

Actually, the British foot is 30.5 cm and the American foot is 30.48 cm; both miles are 5280 feet. The American mile is therefore 1609.344 meters while the British mile is 1610.4 meters -- more than a whole meter different! [gasp!]

These carriers just look like a big fat target to me.

Whats to keep someone from sneaking up on one is a boat or small sub (hell, even the drug runners have those now) and just blowing a hole in the bottom of it?
