I do hope that our "leaders" are as responsible as the sailors on board our ships. Our pickets screening flat tops need to watch for nuke mines.
Crazy monkey attacks are what I expect as the organ grinder does not want a face off. He'll lose face, neck and all, but few on the left coast want to be "traded" for Taiwan's liberty.

We would never, never do it, and I'm not sure it would be justified.
Our carriers are legitimate military targets (albeit large and expensive ones). Retaliation must have some symmetry, and I very much doubt we would incinerate a million Chinese civilians over a lucky shot.
