The candid answer should have been from the United States: while you're on welfare, we'll do as we please, and to any real American, it's favorable to have Israel pushed into the sea than one American soldier dying (all strategic things being equal, of course).
And the candid answer from the U.S. Navy would be: Before you kill American sailors and try to sink American ships in international waters, you should first bend over and kiss your ass goodbye.

As they watch a second plane dives in from port and fires rockets at the bridge. The attack on the United States has begun. They attack again and again with rockets and 30 mm armor-piercing shells. Blood flows so thickly over the metal floor of the pilothouse that sailors trying to transverse the deck slip and fall into the blood. The dead, dying and wounded are scattered about. |

On the Liberty it looked like the ship would sink so three life rafts were lowered into the water. One of the Israeli boats shot up two of them and the third was brought aboard as a war trophy. There were to be no survivors! |

They said the Israeli planes were flying over quite awhile before the attack.
They said the planes were so low that they could see and were waving at the pilots as they were sunning on the deck.
During the attack johnson ordered planes that were being sent to stop the attack to return to their ship.
johnson said he didn't want to embarrass his allies.
Maybe just like Ron Brown's airplane there was a threat aboard that needed to be silenced and like Ron Brown's plane the rest were "acceptable losses".
My old man was in the Navy for twenty years and I never saw an American ship that wasn't plainly marked or not flying the American flag.
Besides this was a radio ship and wasn't armed for battle , I'm sure this must be common knowledge to anyone who may be warring with us.
For anyone like the above poster to now direct the attention to the USS Marine attack at Lebanon GIVE ME A BREAK !! There is a difference in an attack by our enemies and an attack by our alllies/friends !
