America must always be on the side of freedom. We were hated for supporting the Shah. Let's not make the same mistake this time by giving Iranians the impression we support anti-American towelheads for the sake of ephemeral "stability." Let's make sure Muslims know freedom and democracy is as much their birthright as it has been for people living in the West.

Kinda hard to do when you are busy supporting the authoritarian regimes that control Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

The Iranian people love us, the Kuwaitis hate us.

Gee, I wonder why.

Once again, you have got this very — it's very difficult for people to understand exactly how pro- American the public — more pro-American than the average college faculty in this country.

That's not saying much.

America is the first country that fights and bleeds on foreign soil solely to Liberate and never to Conquer.

There are two pillars that hold up the house of radical Islam finacially and theologically....Saudi Arabia and Iran. It seems like the smartest thing that the US could do is nudge the Iran pillar just a tad and let it's impetus carry it on over. With the toothless mullahs and loony ayatollahs gone, Iran would be firmly in the pro-US camp as our best Muslim ally behind Turkey. I hesitate to say this, but I would rather see us throw our support behind a regime change in Iran first, instead of Iraq. Not only would it ease some pressure on Israel, but it would help us to get all our ducks lined up in a row before going out and giving the Saudis and Saddam the b**chslapping they have so richly deserved for twenty years.

The first, last, and only explanation we owe the rest of the world for our military's actions. Well said MUD.

Excellent thread.

And, in fact, on the night of September 11th, thousands of Iranians turned out into the streets of Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz, with lighted candles mourning the American dead in the attacks in New York and Washington. And on the fourth of July, they set off fireworks.

Amazing. I knew the previous generation hated us due to our support of the late Shah. They hated his secret police, in particular, and look what they traded it for.

So many thousands of Iranians were educated in U.S. universities; I went to one large Texas university which was known as Tehran West, due to over 1,000 Iranian students, mostly in engineering. And to be honest, most of us couldn't stand them because they were the biggest group of lying cheaters I've ever witnessed. And that may sound like a gross generalization, but it's not, you would have had to be working in an engineering dept. there to believe what all they pulled.

Oh well, if they've decided to start liking us again and a new government would stop the terrorist funding....

Gee, I wonder why.

Iranian culture is different; it is not Arabic. As such, it is capable of reason, of dealing with reality, of arriving at moral truths.

Kuwait, however is Arabic. As such, it is incapable of reason, incapable of dealing with reality, unable to arrive at moral truths.

I know several Iranians here in California, who do not support the Islamic government. They don't always see the world exactly like I do, but they DO see it very much like these younger people in Iran, today. That is WHY they left, years ago.

Prior to the fall of the Shah (thanks to Jimmy Carter), Iran was considered a plum assignment by military personnel because of it's extremely pro-American attitude.

Seen any recent significant feats of engineering, over in that area of the world. Didn't think so.

I believe there are irrigation tunnels, going back hundreds, even thousands of years. They are now fallen to disrepair.

My experience is that Muslims, in general, struggle to differentiate the true from the false. Therefore, most Iranians are suspect. I am optimistic for Iranians; not for Arabs. One is "trainable" and the other is not.

Yep...except for Kosovo, our fighting men and women have fought on the side of the Righteous Cause in every single War we've entered, IMHO...we should expect the rest of the World to trust us by now.

"Couldn't have said it better. Freedom will always win in the end, so let's always back the winner. They need to win it themselves though. Our moral support is fine, but if the CIA goes in and assists in a coup, we will lose all credibility once again. I sure hope they manage to get rid of their hardliners. Maybe then we'd find out what a real Muslim democracy is all about."

Couldn't agree more, conniving and back-dealing will only end up alienating them again. Moral support is the best in this situation. Whatever happened to Radio Free Tehran and Radio Free Afghanistan, etc?

Modern terrorism was invented by the Ayatollah Khomeini

Best line ever about Iran was when P.J. O'Rourke said the Ayatollah looked like a constipated Gabby Hays. :)

Good point guy, but looking over the sesspool called the Middle East and Africa, maybe its time to re-colonize the entire area. Should take about three weeks.
