A "practicing Jew" is someone who believes in G*D and observes the commandments in the Torah.

Very likely he celebrates eight day exmass (Hanukah).

Here's one for you.

A thousand years ago somewhere in Europe a pious Rabbi had a dream one night. An angel appeared and said,

There is a continent across the Atlatic Ocean and a thousand years from there will be Jews living there and this is how they will celebrate Hanukah.

The Rabbi then sees the partying, the gift giving, the all around revelry. Then he wakes up and says to himself,

If that's how they celebrate Hanukah, just imagine how they must celebrate Shevous!
