BTW... Thanks for pointing that out to me... I was not double checking the URL's and was copying the link from my Profile page which breaks the URL up over 2 lines, which was leaving a break in the URL when I would copy & paste it and I didn't notice it was doing that.

Here is the last paragraph of the article;

Child abductions at the hands of a non-family member are rare, and in the overwhelming majority of cases the child is found or returned alive. The murder of a child by a stranger is extremely rare, but protocols must be in place and ready to be activated should a stranger abduction/murder occur. While it is important to stress the low incidence of these crimes, adults and children must continue to be aware of their existence and be educated on both the realities of all children being at risk of this crime and the circumstances and lures used in the majority of these abductions. By becoming aware of the true dynamics of this crime, adults can teach children how to recognize the threat and, hopefully, avoid it.

That assessment is to determine whether an incident is a kidnapping or a runaway. In the Smart case, the FBI and SLCPD have made the assessment and have determined it is a kidnapping. The FBI would not be involved otherwise.

I thought the details about how the investigation should proceed were interesting. From what I can tell, LE is following these guidelines in the Smart case.

One of the guidelines suggested to keep the media interested throughout the case. The people directly involved are doing a good job of that!

Interesting, too, that most kids who are abducted by strangers are found alive. A statistic I read elsewhere stated that 50% of the kids are found alive, the remaining 50% are killed within 4 hours.

I would like to know the time range within which the vast majority of the kids found alive are located.

If what I have read is correct, then there is reason to hope that Liz is still alive, unless the vast majority of kids found alive are located within a week or two.

   RICCI COURT DATE POSTPONED TO JULY 31

    The initial courtroom appearance for former handyman Richard Ricci, identified by police as a possible suspect in the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping, has been continued to July 31.

Ricci, 48, was scheduled to be in court Wednesday on charges involving theft of $3,500 worth of items from the Smart home in June 2001 and an earlier burglary of a nearby home. The charges are unrelated to the girl's abduction, and Ricci hasn't been charged in the kidnapping case.

Court spokeswoman Jan Thompson said Saturday that Ricci's initial appearance was postponed because prosecutor Kent Morgan had an out-of-town conflict.

Smart was taken from her bedroom June 5 by an armed intruder.

Through his lawyer, Ricci has denied involvement in the abduction. He was returned to prison last month and remains jailed without bond for violating parole."

Thanks for posting the article. It only lacked one thing. As far as security in the home goes, a dog is one of the best measures you can take. A good dog, big or small, is a powerful deterrant to intruders.

I don't have children myself, but I do have a niece and a nephew. When they sleep over here, I make sure one of my three dogs is in each of their rooms.
