State Fair Cuts Black Rodeo From Program
Cowboys Protest Decision Not To Have Black Rodeo This Year

POSTED: 12:20 p.m. PDT July 12, 2002 UPDATED: 12:35 p.m. PDT July 12, 2002

SACRAMENTO -- Black cowboys are protesting a decision to cut the black rodeo from this year's California State Fair in Sacramento.

For years, African-American cowboys have competed in front of large crowds at the State Fair during Black Culture Day.

But the rodeo was canceled after Ed Phillips, an African-American member of the State Fair Board of Directors, suggested the black rodeo be dropped in favor of a two-day multicultural rodeo.

The new event will not exclude the African-American cowboys, but many of the black cowboys are skeptical of the new event, saying it is watering down culture and representation of African-Americans.

Some black cowboys are asking people to boycott the state fair, which is held at Cal Expo in August.

I've got a real special "hoss" Grey Davis and all his lying compadres can ride...

It is called the " MARE OF STEEL. "

It was taken from some Vikings who took it from the Moors centuries ago...

Rodeo as a part of black culture? Rodeo is part of American culture and many black cowboys were a part of that. Some even gaining notoriety from the sport, like Nat Love and Bill Pickett.

Every rodeo is "multicultural" in that white, black, Indian, hispanic, and even asian cowboys compete. At least that was the way it was when I competed in rodeo.

No, you left out gay rodeo, Muslim rodeo, fat rodeo, handicapped rodeo, senior citizen rodeo, terrorist rodeo... There must be a public forum to make sure that no other group has been overlooked.
