D.C. Police Chief Charles Ramsey

The same Charles Ramsey who couldn't find any donuts while searching the area where Chandra Levy's body was found but managed to overlook some interesting bones? That Charles Ramsey?

Shalom.

Murder Rate Skyrockets in DC

WJLA.com – Seven News; Washington, DC

Washington - You're about to see more police patrolling the streets of Washington, because crime scene tape is going up more and more, as the murder rate skyrockets.

The numbers are disturbing. This time last year, 90 people had been murdered. So far this year, 117 murders have occurred in the District, an increase of 30 percent.

The nation's capital is also setting new records for unsolved murders -- last year fewer homicides were solved in Washington than any time in the past decade.

To combat the increased violence, next week DC Police Chief Charles Ramsey plans to put 100 more cops on the street; moving officers currently working desk jobs to the streets in some of Washington's most crime ridden neighborhoods.

While some residents say they'd welcome more officers in their neighborhoods, others are concerned that more police may simply lead to more harassment, and some officials say simply putting more officers on the street will not solve Washington's growing problem with gang-related murders.

ABC 7 did some checking on the murder rates in other jurisdictions.

-In Prince George's County, there were 56 homicides this time last year. That's jumped to 63 this year.

-Montgomery County counts seven murders at this time last year, and 12 this year.

-In Arlington last year had one, this year, there have been four.

-In Alexandria this time last year, the number was three. So far this year there have been two.

Prince William County does not have numbers available.
