I'll state it again for the benefit of others, there have been people on these threads who have pretty much convinced me that should something terrible befall a child in my neighborhood, I may indeed have second thoughs of offering help

Let me guess, English isn't your first language, is it. I did NOT say I would deny help if asked. I did not even say I would deny offering help. All I said was I am at the point were I said I am pretty convinced I would have SECOND THOUGHTS about offering help. Try learning to read.
