You're almost right - "bugs don't lie"
However, when the guy finished his testimony, he finally admitted to the prosecutor that he really didn't know how long the body had been there!! And ... the body could have been there for 2 or 3 weeks longer than he had suggested; which means, Westerfield could have dumped the body BEFORE the police started following him.
W H A T?? This is the solid testimony which will prove Westerfield didn't do it?? I don't think so.
The weather is a variable which is very unpredictable. In a house or apartment, where the atmosphere is somewhat regulated, it may bring on the "dead" bugs sooner. But ... with the body being outside, it could have been very cold and very warm within the same day, causing a variance which really hinders the accuracy of the dateline.
I don't think this exonerates Mr. Westerfield at all - in fact, the fiber evidence was much more compelling.

I think you misinterpreted what the expert said and as for fiber evidence so far it's smoke and mirrors, fibers are notoriously poor trace evidence.

In the good ole USA, you don't have to prove you didn't do it. They have to prove you did.
