Wouldn't "sneaking in" to a private building be regarded as criminal trespass?

Yes, you're probably right but because it was partly open we took the opportunity to check it out.

Furthermore, there was no sign posted outside that said it was off limits to the public. In order for one to trespass, there has to be a sign posted before the entrance area to put one on notice. There was none in the case and the door was unlocked. Apparently, there was some construction going on inside and hardly anybody was around.
