Well, anyway I liked the masons till that point.. I really wanted to join.

But to torture a widow like that just burned me.. How could you do that? That's heartless.

It sounds like a " couple of rogues ", indeed. Believe me, I have NEVER heard, nor personally seen such a thing, in my entire life. Some old busybodies ( yes, men can be " busybodies too ) got a flea up their collective noses. As far as I know, This is NOT " usual / normal " Masonic behavior.

I have NEVER known any Mason, who wasn't a good man. My grandfather was one of THE best ! He loved and campaigned / worked to get Teddy Roosevelt elected and told me all about him, when was a little girl. It was so much better and much more informative, than anything I ever got in school, about him.

Please don't hold this against Masonry, just take it as what it sounds like it was; some rather pecular men, doing that which is NOT part of Masonry at all.
