From what I've seen, some gays-like some drug users-try to gain public acceptance by claiming they are part of a vast underground, and therefore very close to being the norm.

They wrongly think the reason they feel bad about themselves is that everyone is telling them their deeds are evil, and if only everyone would tell them how wonderful their deeds are then they will be able to feel good about themselves. But they don't derive their self-loathing from society. It comes from within their own consciences.
