I was actually worried about this recently. I feel that I am in the formative stages of schizophrenia and I have often wondered if my heavy marijuana use in high school and college has led to it. Well, this clears it up a bit. Probably a good time for me to see a doctor.

Marijuana, however, has only been linked to schizophrenia in those who are already genetically prone to the disease. There is little evidence to suggest that it poses any such risk to those not genetically predisposed to schizophrenia. Okay everybody, go back to what you were doing.

Research on drugs and mental illness is like layers of an onion.
Research on drugs and mental illness is a leech permanently attached to our wallets.
Somebody has to pay for it. Somebody always has to pay for it, one way or another.
I'd rather you and others who believe as you do pay for it on your own since you believe it to be worthwhile and let me off of the merry go round.

This result provides genetic evidence that marijuana use can result in schizophrenia or a significantly increased risk of schizophrenia, lead researcher Hiroshi Ujike stated.
Marijuana, however, has only been linked to schizophrenia in those who are already genetically prone to the disease. There is little evidence to suggest that it poses any such risk to those not genetically predisposed to schizophrenia.
The results only indicate that schizophrenics have a tendency to use marijuana, not that marijuana causes schizophrenia.

It is interesting that the drug prohibitionists are not promoting the junk science of the shrink drug (err "medicine") pushers.

schizophrenia: Any of several psychotic disorders characterized by distortions of reality and disturbances of thought and language and withdrawal from social contact
Aside from withdrawal from social contract the characterizations describe many big media news personalities and writers, politicians, bureaucrats, lawyers, college professors, Bishops and sad to say, some people on this forum. ;^)

In your face potheads! What do you say about your "harmless drug" now!?!
To: kattracks
1. Pot is not a hallucinogenic drug. It is a euphoric.
2. If you're prone to schizophrenia, you probably shouldn't smoke pot, drink alcohol, smoke tobacco or eat most supermarket red-meat. We only bother to outlaw one of these risk factors. Pot.
3. In the Swedish study, did they report similar rates of heavy/chronic marijuana usage in both the schizophrenics and non-schizophrenics? In other words, it may be that schizophrenics are more likely to smoke pot than non-schizophrenics. If this were so, we'd see a coincidental, not a causal link. It would show up as a greater incidence of schizophrenia in the pot-smoking population as well.
4. Why don't news organizations require journalists to take rudimentary scientific method courses and intro to statistics before they let them write stories about scientific studies?
To: Maceman
Marijuana use can stimulate the symptoms of schizophrenia
Duh-so will cocaine, ecstacy, and others. Sch is a brain based nuerological disorder and any idiot knows that for these unfortunate human beings any pyschotropic drug is potentially dangerous and potentiates the disorder as does bing drinking potentiate those predisposed to alochol.

I love this. The prohibitionists have now aligned themselves with the shrink drug pushers and their junk science, much like Al Capone who is rumored to have given donations to the Anti-Saloon League in the 1920s!
