Why don't we know what the L stands for?

They said that the little girl, Danielle L, was a minor, and they couldn't disclose her last name. Therefore, in order to keep that intact, they can't disclose her mother's last name either.

I wondered about that ..could be to protect her from physical harm..(What connections do the VD's have?)

I was thinking that the L in the last names may just be a designation to keep the identities unknown - maybe L just stands for last(name).
