We "get over" being angry with them, try to remember the good things they did, and forgive them the trespasses...
DAW seems to be the kind of man who went the distance to be kind to those less fortunate, even though he may have inherited a taste for spirits...
Give folks a break, Kim. I can only assume you are still young, and haven't had enough life experience yet to understand. A few more years under your belt can change your perspective on ever-present human frailties...
None of us are perfect, and none of us should be "hung" for that failure to achieve the impossible... Do you want to be judged by the same standard you are judging others... just wait till your kids reach the late teens, early twenties... then you will be singing a very different tune...

I reached that point a long time ago, and treasure my parents. ( And they never did anything horrible, either)
My sister, who I no longer have contact with, is ten years older than me, but our parents were NEVER PERFECT enough for her. She blames all her problems on them, although she has had 30 years AWAY from them.
DW doesn't strike me as an immature individual, who can't get on with life because he has been "mistreated".
The Van Dams strike me as EXACTLY the type to duck responsibility for as long as possible.
