I have a teenaged daughter who values herself enough to NOT dress like a slut. She is ummm...well-endowed... but chooses to dress modestly and conservatively. She came home the other night from a carnival and told me that many of the pre-teen girls were wearing way-too-short shorts and little tube-tops and she was disgusted. Do parents think it's "cute" for their daughters to dress like that ?? -- it's really sick if you ask me--kids grow up too fast in this society as it is...why push sexuality on them at such a young age. Why would any loving parent allow their young daughter to go out in a top that says "boy candy" or "sex goddess" ?? These are kids who are not old enough to buy their own clothes, so the parents have to be a part of it. I just don't understand it at all.

Its the Britney Spears look girls today think looks both hot and cool at the same time. They want to be boy magnets. Now there's the irony for women: they've desperately tried to stop pleasing men and begin living their own lives only to find in the end they craved men after all.

I wonder if today's (generally fat) moms are simply living vicariously through the notion that their daughter is attracting the attention of men that the mother knows she would never be able to attract.

Sounds like my daughter...

My daughter is like yours and has the self esteem and confidence to say no to Madison Avenue. We spend an inordinate amount of time shopping to find clothes that don't scream "teen slut queen". If parents would quit shelling out money to buy bordello clothes, the clothing manufacturers would get the message. It doesn't hurt to complain to the managers of department stores either. The local Dillard's manager knows exactly why we no longer shop the junior department in his store.

I'm never having children. I'm smart enough to know that I'd either overparent or underparent to the extreme. It's how I am. Not everybody is cut out to be parents. Some of us have other roles to play in life, though many parents view this as a selfish decision. Of course it is. So is HAVING children. We want the satisfaction of doing something to make others' lives better. This is inherently selfish -- wanting that satisfaction. Then there are those who wish to preserve a legacy, such as Saddam.

But articles like this certainly help me justify my decision. I'd wager it's harder now to raise a child than it's ever been. Even back in the dark days of crib death, war, famine, etc. Family values, as trite a phrase as it is, seem to be viewed as an archaic notion, not suited for our time. Enlightened, are we? I think not. I blame the rise of liberalism for this.

Sorry for rambling. Today quite possibly will end up being one of the worst, if not the worst, days of my life. It's a loooonnnng story.

Your daughter sounds like my 16-year-old daughter; she's also.........ummm............let's say she's put together like Jessica Rabbit. However, she's a great kid with a really good head on her shoulders. She's VERY knowledgeable about fashions, etc., and is equally disdainful of the "hoochie mamas" at her high school (or the mall or wherever....). She dresses sharp, but conservatively. What the "young hookers" don't get is that young ladies like your daughter and mine actually get more respect and........consequently.........more of the right kind of attention from boys.

What cracks me up is my little bombshell daughter has NO use for the boys anyway. She knows she can get such attention anytime, anywhere.......so she doesn't "need" it. She just says "nope; too busy with other things; not interested", smiles sweetly, and leaves 'em in a puddle. As a very protective Dad, I just love that...:)
