What am I. My great grandfather was an Austrian Jew who stowed away around 1880-1890 when he was 12 years old. He was taken from New York somehow to Alabama where he was raised by protestants, I think. I am not sure if he converted or not. His son, my grandfather was Baptist (foot-washing I think). I tried to figure our by Nuremburg laws what I am, but am still unsure. parsy.

I wasn't giving you the Nurnberg law definitions. I was giving you the Orthodox definition -- A Jew is someone whose mother was a Jew or who has undergone a proper conversion. So being Jewish by birth only depends on the matrilineal line of descent. Fathers, grandfathers, father's mother, etc. are irrelevant.

Safe, as long as you aren’t concealing any affinity or contact with the Jewish community.

Your grandfather would have been sent to the camps.

Your dad of course was a Jew for purposes of this book. Bet he’d be surprised.

It’s a major flaw of attaching significance to the presence of “Jews” in Hitler’s army. These are largely the guy on the church pew behind you, who happened, like your dad, to have a Jewish grandpa. It’s largely a reflection of the assimilation of Jews into German culture in the 19th century.
