1) I can tell from the synopsis of the book that only the loveliest parts of the Koran are in the book. It's like saying that reading Psalms alone is a good representation of the Bible.
2) You'll discuss the book in a small group lead by a select faculty or staff member during the Week of Welcome...
Who will be chosen to lead the discussions? Makes a big difference.

If they're anything like they were in middle school and high school, they won't read it at all. If some prof actually works the book into class assignments, there'll be a run at the bookstore. They'll read excerpts.
"We want to show students that Carolina is about reading, thinking and writing -- not just about getting the best basketball tickets," he said.
Where do people come up with fertilizer like this? This is educator-speak. (I'm an educator. I recognize it. Let me hasten to say I never speak educator-speak. Leaves you with bad breath.)

"We want to show students that Carolina is about reading, thinking and writing -- not just about getting the best basketball tickets," he said. It's obvious after last year's 8-20 (or so) record that no one is going to UNC to get the best basketball tickets. At least for now, the best basketball tickets in the area are about 12 miles down the road in Durham.
Of course the Dukie professors are not any less liberal than what you find in Chapel Hill.

A publically funded university has NO business making any religious study, or study of religion, mandatory. This is liberal, PC, feelgood BS. The Constitution guaranties freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.

This world is upside down.
I remember shortly after 9/11 one of the Christian leaders was asked how God could let this happen. The leader responded "you take God out of the schools, out of the buildings, out of everywhere, and then you want him to conveniently show up when you want him?"
They're taking out God, and as if that isn't bad enough they're replacing him with Allah. This is simply insane.

Last week I went out and bought a copy of the Koran and started reading it. A translation of the Koran is available free online as well, here.
I also bought The Fecderalist Papers, which I never read before. I'm saving it for the five-hour plane trip from Boston to FRiva Las Vegas.
Lord of the Rings is due out on DVD on August 6, so I'll probably be watching that on the flight from DFW to Lost Wages for the Friva.
