For his third year of college, my younger boy studied abroad for one year, at Imperial College in London, England...his area of study was engineering, math and science, but he took a world history class, because he wanted to see how world history, taught in a British University, would differ from world history taught in an American University...

I guess he made himself quite the unpopular guy at times, because he constantly was challenging the professor and his point of view...

The biggest point of difference, was when the professor, was going to discuss, where and when Winston Churchill had won WW11...my son raised his hand, and questioned the prof about the roll of the Americans in this victory...what followed, to hear my son tell it, was quite unpleasant...

He and the prof got into it, on many points, many of the students in that class(British students) were actually angry at my son, and some wound up not speaking to him again...seems he dispelled some of their illusions, and they just did not like that...

Oh, my son got an A in the class, not because he touted the profs line, but because he demonstrated he could think, could offer intelligent discourse to the conversation, and was constantly keeping the prof on his toes...

And he made a number of enemies along the way, but as he said, so be it...

....for all their criticism of America and its supposed militant posturing, here were my friends, bearing wine, celebrating the Fourth of July and staying late, long after we wanted to clear up and go to bed. After all, these were the same people who had called me and my parents on September 11 and sent flowers to lay at the site....

Right. So some 'friend' you are, scooting home from their hospitality to backstab them in your newspaper column. The 'why do they hate us' genre is the hottest thing in US journalism right now, and you're the most repulsive exploiter of it yet, Julia.

Oh well, roll on with the anti-UK posts, everybody. The usual suspects will take the word of a biased tabloid American journalist over the actions of 80 million Britons, as usual.

Well, geez........it's too late to say this, it seems, but before everyone goes teeing off on the Brits after reading this............

Look, she was talking primarily to a bunch of college kids.

A) Tell me that there is actually a college in the US or Europe that isn't peopled with ultra-leftist faculty and isn't hell-bent to cram young peoples' heads with this crap.

B) Tell me you wouldn't hear exactly the same thing in Berkeley or practically any US university or college, and

C) Who give a flying fiddler's damn what a bunch of air-headed college kids think?

Add to that a mix of "theater types" (need I say more???)................

I'll wager that the majority of Brits DO remember our close relationship, DO remember WWI and WWII, and DO know that WE give a damn about them. They feel the same way towards us.

It's just as much up to us to educate OUR youth as it is for the Brits to educate theirs.

I have a close friend in the Royal Air Force who travels each year to train for six weeks here in south Florida with his squaron of Nimrod Bombers...they do antisub warfare off the coast of Florida. When he's not flying, this guy is a gamekeeper on about a 12000 acre estate.

You should HEAR the stories he has about how his own people ABUSE their own military! He thinks that our military are revered almost as gods compared to the crap the British people pile on the men and women charged with keeping them safe in an unsafe world. The Brits have been edging ever closer to world socialism/communism since the IRON LADY (Maggie Thatcher) was deposed....and especially since the reign of Tony Blair.

I guess we really shouldn't be too surprised at this attitude. Like New York liberals, French socialists and the British leftists....they are what they are. Why should we act all surprised and hurt when they are merely staying in character?

The brits have short memories. We had to kick their ass to gain our freedom. We also had to save their ass from the germans.

ALAS!

The Fatuous Morons who comprised a large Portion of the "Guest List" conveniently forgot that they would be speaking German (or, more likely, Russian) if America hadn't "intervened" in WWII!

More than that, it takes a "near-Genius IQ" to "Strap on" an F-102 (1940's-50's Technology) and survive a flight (let alone SEVERAL flights!)

"W" was regarded as a "Good Stick" by his Pilot Evaluators--in an F-102, he HAD to be intelligent & courageous!!

The "above" leads me to believe that "W" is a VERY intelligent man!

The last "Leader" the 'Brit's had of ANY "Moral Character" was Maggie Thatcher!

As long as "Blair" is their elected leader, they have NO BASIS to criticise us!!

The next time one of your pathetic Brit acquaintances complains about us, ask him/her why they have the gall to speak to you in English (NOT German or Russian!)

Although their criticisms of American policy may have some validity, you really shouldn't be too upset by the hostility displayed towards the US by these submissive-minded, Marxist ingrates.

Simply remind them that they would all now be slaves of the Third Reich were it not for the blood of many, many Americans.

Fifty years ago, before the bombs started dropping in London, many "civilized" Europeans (and some Americans, to their shame) were saying:

"You know, basically Hitler is right."

Whatever America's flaws may be, Europe's Marxist minds are virtually incapable of comprehending Freedom; therefore they hate its perilous implications.

They much prefer the peaceful, subsidized tranquility of a socialist welfare state, a state which is made possible due to the military might of the USA; through two World Wars, they have been either unable or unwilling to defend themselves. Just remind them of that and they should pipe down. And remind them that socialist governments killed more people in the 20th century than all other causes combined.

Winston Churchill was the last of his kind in England, I fear. All that is left now are socialist appeasers who wish to propagandize their people into the EU nanny state.

OK, I'm done ranting about Eurosocialist ingrates whose asses we saved twice, for now...

"Everyone in Britain thinks he's horrible; we were really gutted when he won. We wanted the other guy, what's his name? - Gore - to win."

Why would the Brits rather have Gore?

The short, paraphrased answer would have to be: "Because he's more socialist."

Europeans know America, but they do not understand it. I bet a few Euros have read the constitution, but fewer have read the Federalist Papers, Adam Smith, John Locke...the authors, thinkers who we got our American ideas from.

Europe is the land of good intentions and the road to hell is paved with them. They have created their own hell through their "will to power" crap.

I remember when Clinton was in, and the Europeans liked him only to make fun of him. I had friends that went to Europe who were asked "how could Americans vote for Clinton?" He was the laughing stock of the world with zilcho credibility. Those young Brits that hate America are just being fed tripe by their liberal press (or maybe they are reading our biased liberal press as well.)

America is little different from 60 years ago when America pulled Britain's arse from the fire and saved them from the politics of defeat embodied by Neville Chamberlain. Terror from the skies slammed them and America backed Britain, much against our own best interests, at the time. Britain has always been a strange little country. Ruled by strange people and queerly oblivious to their own sordid actions. Why any sane American would want to live in Britain is a mystery to me.
