I had the honor of meeting another of the Tuskeegee Airmen in 1990, and worked the wires to get him invited to my squadron as a VIP guest. One sign of how things have changed over the decades was our resident Citadel graduate--he listened raptly and very respectfully to every word the man spoke. (I later kidded him that he should have said, "I am but dust at thy feet, O Master. Teach me the ways of the Force that I might become a true Jedi.")

Sadly, we don't usually know it until they're gone, but once in a while we can look back and realize that, occasionally, giants really do walk among us...

Another of the Tuskeegee Airmen, Col Faite Mack died here in Grand Rapids a couple months ago.
I know his son Faite Mack Jr., PhD, who teaches at a local State University.
Col. Mack raised a fine decent son who never did the "whine," but instead worked to get where he is.
Like father like son.
