I am illiterate when it comes to health. Both my wife and I are wanting to change our lifestyle, lose weight, exercise (I'm more in need of toning up rather than trimming down). I'm getting a lot of conflicting messages here, but what I take away from it is this: I should eat a high protein diet with lots of veggies, low on fruit, rarely eat starches and eliminate all the junk in addition to exercising (weight training, etc.). Would this be the moderate approach?

Basically, it the diet that most of the world ate until the advent of the low fat/high carb fad: whole, unprocessed foods. What it comes down to is you eliminate refined carbs, such as white and wheat breads, sugar, sugary fruit drinks and processed or chemical laden meats.

My menu includes meat, fish, cheese, eggs, vegetables, nuts, beans and low glycemic fruits. Starchy fruits and veggies are not good for you and should be eaten in moderation because they are very high in sugar.

This is not a starvation diet that is low in fat or calories so you can live on it forever and never get hungry. I would suggest checking out his website to get more information but if you decide to do it, it's real important to buy the book.

And you don't have to be a weightlifter, but Atkins does recommend exercise. Weightlifting is great, though!

Go HERE and also get Atkins' book. Read the whole book and lay in the right food. Also, no matter what the book says, you would kill for a donut after a few days. Once your body kicks into fat burning the diet is basically effortless. Also I found that potassium and l-carnitine help a great deal when you first get on the diet
