They want to keep her story and potential testimony untainted. Little kids are susceptible to wanting approval from adults, or agreeing with adults. The police have said that Mary Katherine has given them a lot of information, and Lois Smart, the mom, has been in on the interviews...

If Lois has been in on all the MK interviews with Police then she knows everything MK has said therefore it makes sense why the Police would ask the family not to ask as they already know or at Lois and Ed does, assuming Lois shared the info with her husband.
