How fitting that an erroneous story bore an erroneous by-line. The writer was David Lauter. It appears Mr. Lauter decided that a white male did it based on the Stern employee or groupie's prank. I've sent an e-mail to David.Lauter@latimes.com.
Matt Welch, the proprietor-cynic of
the L. A. Examiner site, fell for the urban legend too. The British Channel Four had the right name for it -- "malicious disinformation."
