Most Americans will agree generally with the statement that government should be smaller. But when they see the cuts begin to affect their pet programs, all bets are off.
I don't have the confidence in the wisdom of the majority of the electorate that you apparently have.
There would have been a groundswell of support for a rededication to the Contract with America, and the year 2004 would see a real conservative in the White House.

Nothing is certain, but I chose to believe that people are good for the most part.
I believe that citizens can be trusted to act in their selfish interests, for themselves, their family, and, by extension, their community and nation. Self-interest creates a just society.
It is akin to the way that the free market works, with market forces producing better results than "progressive" government planning.
