Simple question: Did AR 670-1 authorize the patches, adornments, and modifications to the Army uniform that New opposed?

Answer: no.

New wanted the Army to obey it's own rules or change the rules. That simple. It did neither.

New was technically correct no matter what the court martial may have ruled under political pressure. The Army was ordering him to violate a long standing Army Regulation. That is a fact. Was what he did the smartest thing in the world? Maybe not.
