FRANKLY nobody knows that answer for sure- VA had over 60,000 free black men alone. most states, surprisingly, did NOT keep records by race, NOR did the pension records of any state but KY mention race either.

that's just ONE of the frustrations of southron ethnography; for example my friend who is doing a study of the religious, ethnic,social structures of BOTH military forces in the WBTS has had a VERY difficult time separating the LEEs who are of anglo-saxon ancestry from those LEEs of Asian ancestory.

But you must have something that you base your claim of 60,000 free black males in Virginia on? And I would assume that that was free black males of all ages, so a sizable percentage would be children under military age.
